Managing Your Video Game Backlog

Video Game Backlog

Like most of you, I have a HUGE backlog of video games that I haven’t even touched. Between work and school, I have to fight to make time for gaming. Too many games and not enough time. So there they sit on my bookshelf, neat rows of unopened games still shrink-wrapped in cellophane.

I’m embarrassed to say that I haven’t even opened Call of Duty Black Ops or L.A. Noire. I’d been meaning to, but then Skyrim got in the way. Just as I completed my last quest and was about to tackle the backlog, Farcry 3 came out. Dang! Instead of my backlog growing smaller, it grew larger. And it continues to grow. Larger. And larger…

If I don’t want my living room to be overtaken by Assassin’s Creed and Mass Effect sequels, I need to take action. Here then is my three step game plan (pun intended) on managing my video game backlog:

  1. Buying Video GamesStop buying new games. All right, this seems to be the first, necessary step I have to take in order to manage my video game backlog. Logically, I wouldn’t even have a backlog if I didn’t buy too many games in the first place (duh!). As easy as it sounds though, it’s incredibly difficult for me to go cold turkey on the purchasing front — especially if there’s a hot, critically acclaimed game thats been released or a super bargain (I can’t tell you how many awesome games I’ve scored around Black Friday for under $10). The madness must stop though, and I have control my urge to buy new games.
  2. Sell off the dogs. I’ve got a lot of great games in backlog (The Witcher 2, Gears of War 3, etc.), but I suppose I’ve collected some dogs too (Alpha Protocol, Enslaved, etc.). Granted, because I haven’t even played these games I suppose it’s unfair for me to judge their quality, but I’m going on the opinions of friends and review sites. If I only have a limited amount of time to play video games, why waste time on sub-par titles? By my reckoning, I could sell off at least a quarter of my collection, thereby getting rid of the weak sisters and whittling down the backlog. As a bonus, I’d have some extra cash too. Just have to remember step 1 above…
  3. Skyrim ElfAvoid bottlenecks. As I alluded to earlier, I’d been meaning to work my way through some of my games when Skyrim came out. I was totally stoked for Skyrim, and played the game for over six months straight. During this entire time I was never disappointed, but if I could do it over again, I’d work some other games into the rotation. Yes, I had a blast playing Skyrim, but after a month or so I could have played Alice Madness Returns or Deadspace 2, and then go back to the world of Nords and Dark Elves. This would have kept my game playing fresh, and I would have felt as though I were making good progress at working through my collection.

So how about you? Do you have a video game backlog and if so, what are you doing to manage it?

Street Fighter X Tekken — Get Ready To Rumble!

Street Fighter X Tekken Release Date

Crossover fighting games are really fun to play. Marvel vs Capcom is the prime example of such collaboration. If you are already tired of Marvel vs Capcom then the upcoming Street Fighter X Tekken might once again fire up your excitement for crossovers. I’m very excited too, as I am a big fan of both Street Fighter and Tekken. I can’t wait to use Chun li to beat the crap out of Jack. Yeah, I can feel that you are excited too, and I’m assuming that you already have a character match-up in mind.

First of all, the game is created by Capcom, so the core gameplay of the game will be similar to Street Fighter. Expect that the game will feature familiar Street Fighter elements such as Super Combos and EX Attacks. Each player will choose two fighters for Street Fighter or Tekken. The fighters can be switched out normally or even during combos. The characters will be controlled using the Street Fighter’s 6 button system, but it was revealed later on that Tekken characters can also use the 4 button system to perform combos. As you play the game, the player builds up power up to 3 levels which is represented by the “Cross Gauge” found on the bottom of the screen. By unleashing the power you can either perform Super Arts, EX Attacks, Cancels and various Cross techniques depending on the level of power you have stored. The mechanics of the game is similar to that of the Tekken Tag game. If one of the fighter’s health bar is depleted then the match is over.

Capcom has given heavy emphasis to the tag team aspect of the match. Switch cancel allows the fighter to cancel a combo by switching out. Cross launch combos involve launching the enemy into the air then switch to the other player to continue the combo. You also have the Cross Arts and Cross Assault which can be used once the “cross gauge” is full.

Street Fighter X Tekken introduces two new game mechanics which includes Gem System and Pandora Mode. The gem system allows the player to equip up to 3 gems which will provide stat boost. Pandora Mode is actually a last resort for desperate players. It can be activated once one the player’s life is less than 25%. It requires the player to sacrifice the team mate for an added strength and infinite Cross Gauge. If Pandora Mode runs out without defeating the other player, then the player who activated it automatically loses.

Street Fighter X Tekken is coming to PS3, PS Vita, Xbox 360 and PC on March 6, 2012 in North America and March 9, 2012 in Europe.

Diablo III Sneak Peek

Diablo III Release Date

It was on June 2008 when Diablo III was announced at the Blizzard Worldwide Invitational in Paris, France. Sadly, up until now, there has been no release date mentioned by Blizzard but on the bright side, we know that the game is nearing its release as the beta has been released last September 2011. I can’t wait for this game either, as it is one of my favorite dungeon crawling role playing games. Old players will have familiarities with the Diablo 3 as it borrows element form its predecessors. As for those who are not familiar with the series, it is a hack and slash dungeon crawling RPG with dark themes. Customization of characters as well as skills is also a major feature of this game.

As for the plot of the game, Diablo III takes place in Sanctuary. It is the world that you have to save from the evil armies of the Burning Hell. It is the same world as in Diablo II. This dark fantasy world is really unfortunate as the dark forces never get tired of ruining things and being the hero of this new generation, you have the responsibility to temporarily stop this evilness. I said temporarily because you know, Diablo IV might come out and take place in Sanctuary again.

As for the gameplay, expect it to be very similar with the previous game but with additions, refinements and improvements. The perspective is in top-down view which I actually prefer when it comes to RPG games. Of course there is a multiplayer through the Battle.net service. Other good additions are the enhanced quest system, the random level generator and the random encounter generator which ensures that the game will have variance when replayed.

And to spoil things a bit, let me introduce to you the different classes in Diablo III. It includes the new witch doctor, barbarian, wizard, monk and demon hunter.  Wait, did I mention that you can now choose the gender of your character?

Catherine Preview

Not even a month to go when Catherine will be released on PlayStation 3. Before it hits the stores across the world, you need to have preview of it whether it is worth buying.

In the game Vincent likes Katherine, his girlfriend, who is smart, pretty and successful. There is one trouble with her. She starts talking about long-term commitments which was always avoided by Vincent.
